Weapos;re back home. Our trip home went even smoother than our trip down. Owen fussed himself to sleep by the time we got on the 401 (about half an hour) and slept till Trenton, north of Toronto. That was about a four hour break between meals for him. We stopped for about an hour, he ate, we ate, and bathroom stops all round. Mack filled up the car, and we headed off again. He fussed/cried himself to sleep again, and then slept almost the whole rest of the way, another 4 hour break between meals He woke up about 20 minutes from home, so we just pushed on through his crying. Though when we got home, one of our neighbours stopped to talk to Mack as I rushed past with a screaming baby to get inside to feed him I felt rude, but Owen does run the household now, and what he says goes. ;-)
On the plus side, it was the neighbour who has two young kids, so she and Mack were chatting about baby gates. She told him what theyapos;d done, and hopefully that will work for us, so that made me feel better. It worked for someone in a place just like ours, so itapos;s do-able. Iapos;ll look into it some more, and figure out our plan.
I even slept a bit on the drive home, completely missed Kingston and Brockville I did notice how beautiful the trees were around Toronto, quite nice. By the time you get north of Toronto, and up towards Ottawa, the trees are already empty of leaves, so itapos;s not as nice.
Oh, and the reason we let him fuss himself to sleep was that my pinky appears to be on the fritz - he was having none of it every time I offered it. I did "shush" him a bit when he appeared calm, and then once his eyes locked onto mine, I closed mine to illustrate what he should do. When I opened my eyes, his were closed Magic. :-)
We had a really good weekend, but I think Mack felt like it was longer than just the two days it was. We had a great visit with my grandmother on Sunday, a really good lunch with her. She was so happy to meet Owen, and he was really well-behaved for her, laughing and smiling at her - at least when he was well-fed and changed anyways :-) My aunt Linda and uncle John were there as well, and thought Owen was adorable. We all had a good visit, and everyone told really funny stories about their childhoods. Owen hadnapos;t slept any length of time all afternoon, so he was getting a little tired and cranky, so we headed back to my parentsapos; place, and finally got him to sleep. He slept well through the night Sunday night too, which was great - got us a good rest before a long drive. He ate at 8 pm, then at 2 am, then 7 am. Long sleeps. My mother told me I was sleeping through the night when I was two months old, as in 8 hour sleeps, not the 5 hour sleeps everyone else calls "sleeping through the night". Iapos;ve already got people mad at me for how long Owen sleeps at night, if he starts sleeping 8 hours, theyapos;ll stone me Well, only if I tell them
Many people have commented that Owen looks just like me as a baby. Heapos;s also got a lot of the same habits as me too - multiple sneezes, sleeping well at night, waking up happy. When we get him up in the morning, he looks at us, and smiles, and coos, and talks away ... Itapos;s really very cute.
When we were visiting with my grandmother, we were at her retirement apartment building, and all the other residents swarmed Owen, as soon as they realized there was a baby. It was like they could smell him. As we walked across the dining hall, every eye in the place followed us We got a number of women stopping us to tell us about their babies, or their grandchildren. One woman told me sheapos;d had 9 kids, all under the age of 12. And the first one was born on Christmas Eve in the backseat of a car
Sadly, I forgot my camera in London, so I donapos;t have any pictures on my camera of that visit, but luckily my mom took a lot of photos. We actually got a number of really cute pictures of Owen this weekend. He really does show off for visitors, so he laughed and smiled a lot - very photogenic. We got an interesting photo just after we arrived home too. Mack was holding Owen on his shoulder, but Owen was leaning out past Mackapos;s arm/shoulder. We looked at his face, and realized heapos;d gone to sleep like that Looks very uncomfortable. Iapos;ll put the photo up on facebook in a couple of days. Owen is now asleep on Mackapos;s chest as Mack lays down on the couch, which amazes me. I wasnapos;t even going to try to put him to sleep again, since heapos;d slept so much in the car Not to mention that usually between 3 pm and 7 pm heapos;s awake and grumpy. He was awake a lot on the weekend, visiting with everyone, so Mack wonders if heapos;s still catching up.
The cats are fine, both have appeared since we got home. Only one appeared to the catsitter, as usual. And someone threw up in three rooms since Sunday, so we had a bit of cleaning to do.
Mack is back to work tomorrow, so Iapos;m back on duty. I think Iapos;ll only have a three day "work week" though. My doctorapos;s appointment is on Friday, at 11 am. Mack will have to take time off to drive me over there, and keep Owen occupied while Iapos;m being examined, and Iapos;m not sure if heapos;ll take a whole day off, or half a day.
I donapos;t think I mentioned where Owen was sleeping all weekend. My parents bought a play yard for him. Not only was he able to sleep in there, but thereapos;s a changing table that attaches on to the top too. Thatapos;s only good till 25 pounds, but hopefully his weight gain is slowing down, or will slow down, so we can use it for a while. We actually packed that up and brought it home with us, because my parents suggested it would be good for other trips we might take - especially the potential drive down to Florida, and at the cottage next year, though I have a feeling thereapos;s already one at the cottage? Maybe Iapos;m mis-remembering. But depending on how many days it takes us to drive to Florida, itapos;ll be good to have a consistent place for him to sleep.
Well, I think thatapos;s about all thatapos;s going on in my head right now. Hope everyone whoapos;s Canadian had a good Thanksgiving weekend, and everyone whoapos;s American had a good weekend - I know I have readers of both citizenship :-)
